Who would've thought I'd find authentic and delicious Chinese food in Dallas?? The xiao long bao is amazing and reminds me of ding tai fung. They make everything fresh right in front of everyone. The gentleman who makes the noodles is rather entertaining and great at putting on a show (like beni hana except with noodles). The service isn't great but the effort is definitely there. This place is great for a family outing, a casual date, or just to hang out. I've had the beef noodle soup, the fried rice, the duck, and the dumpling sampler, all of which are delicious. If I can recommend one thing- just make sure you get the xiao long bao! You won't regret it!

There are many Chinese restaurants in Dallas, most of them unremarkable or worse. Royal China, however, is among the best. I had chicken with broccoli and my husband had orange beef. Both entrees were excellent. The atmosphere is lively but not overbearing. It definitely has a neighborhood atmosphere - clearly a local favorite. There was a birthday party in a private dining room, and we could tell that the staff was making every effort to ensure the guests enjoyed the party. We will definitely return.

After spending a vacation in Singapore I was craving xiao long bao. Thanks to yelp I found this place and it did not disappoint! By far the tastiest xiao long bao I have had in the metroplex. You can choose from chicken or pork so we picked pork. They arrived freshly made and full of mouth scalding soup and meaty bits. We also tried the scallion pancake which I loved but the boyfriend did not. He had the pork belly buns that reminded me of David Chang Momofuku buns on steroids! We shared the dan dan noodles and had to get the thin noodles because they were out of broad? Strange to me since they are visibly making everything in house...They were delicious but not spicy at all. Since I can see the place is full of white folks so I'm guessing I should have asked for true asian spicy :) We also shared the pan fried pork, radish and green onion dumplings- good but greasy- it's pan fried so expect that. Service was very good. I want to go back and try the hot & sour soup and some other dumplings. We came around 1pm on a Sunday and were seated immediately. Maybe because it was St Paddys Day? No one eats asian that day? I'll call ahead next time just to be safe.

I've been to Royal China a few times with my family. It's one of the oldest, if not the oldest, Chinese restaurants in Dallas. The owners and people who work there are very friendly and give good service, more so than your average Chinese restaurants. It's fun and impressive to watch them make the dumplings and noodles behind the bar. You start out with fried crispy wonton strips and dipping sauce, like chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant, on your table.Go here only for the dumplings and noodles. The Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) are the best I've had. The Lanzhou Dan-Dan Lamian (dan dan noodles) are served cold. The thicker Henan Lamian are good stir-fried with vegetables. The freshness of all dumplings and noodles are evident. All other dishes are decently-executed but unexciting Americanized Chinese dishes. I wouldn't bother with them. If you're going low-carb, I suggest you go elsewhere.

Love the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) here on a cold day. The place is surprisingly authentic Chinese for a very American neighborhood. The downside is that the hand-pulled noodles are not available on Mon & Wed and I seem to sadly only wander in on those specific days. Thank goodness for the delicious veggie pan fried dumplings, soup dumplings, and crispy scallion pancake to make my trip from Mansfield worthwhile.

This place offers authentic Chinese dishes aside from the typical American Chinese food: orange chicken, sesame chicken...etc. I've tried all of the pulled noodle dishes, and all are really tasty. My favorite is the lanzhou beef noodle soup. I'm not a lamian expert so I can't vouch for authenticity, but it's not something you see around here in a Chinese restaurant catered to an American crowd so it's definitely worth a try.The Xiaolongbao is a hit or miss. Sometimes it's the greatest thing I've ever tasted, other times the skin is too thick and not soft at all. The other dumplings in the sampler are pretty standard, nothing special except for the pretty colors. They have different kinds of tea with interesting flavors. I always end up going with an oolong variety. The tea is never strong enough to my liking, but I order a different kind each time I go to see if I can find a good one. I'm just persistent like that. The service is also a hit a miss. Most of the waitresses are just awkward and slow, not attentive at all. There's this one waiter I like though, I've only had him once and I wish I could remember his name. He was very quick, nice and humorous.I advise going as early as possible for dinner when going on Friday or Saturday. It gets crowded fast and I would not recommend this place for large groups for that reason.During my first experience here, the electricity went out on a summer day after my order was taken. It was hot as heck, I was seriously sweating while sitting there. No hand pulled noodles were being produced either, so to my disappointment I had to go with something standard like orange chicken. I did not leave however until I got some Xiaolongbao! Luckily the electricity turned on while I was eating. Even though it was one of the worst dining experiences ever, I had to come back just to try the hand pulled noodles. I've been coming back ever since.

After reading all these reviews and my constant craving for Asian food, my friend and I decided to make our trip to Royal China. I really wish I would have made this trip two years ago when I first heard about this place. We got here for lunch and the place was moderately crowded. We got seated promptly next to the secret bathroom in the back. We both decided to for go the lunch menu and order stuff that everyone keeps raving about. Between us we split the dumpling sampler, the pancake, my friend got the Lanzhou Dan-Dan Lamien and I got the Henan Dan-Dan Lamien. Only difference between the two dishes was the first has thin Ramen like noodles and second dish had the flat and wide noodles. The sauce was slightly below room temperature. It was sweet and had a hint of pepper as an after taste. My dish seemed almost as if it was one whole noodle. Think of it as a very liquid version of a Pad Thai. It was delish. The noodles were al dente, nice and chewy, but fully cooked. The Dumplings tasted great, the one problem I had was that the skin was so delicate that the fillings kept falling out. The pancake I enjoyed even more then the dumplings. All in all this place is slightly pricier then most Chinese places, but I enjoyed my lunch while listening to a few business men trying to out do each others 'Shoe" size! This place is a must try!

Finalyy I got the opportunity to go there! As usual, I get my gang in the mood to hand pulled noodles. Made reservations, the restaurant called me to confirm, all set.So we were in about 20 people and we got there we were told we needed to wait the entire group to be there to be seated. As you probably know, this place is very popular and that being a Friday night..it was packed. Including the entrace, lots of people waiting standing up or in the (nice) couches. About 10 minutes later we were wlaked to our table.Orders placed, lots of us order hand pulled noodles (of course) and minutes later a guy showed up (manager or owner) to tell us we should change our order because****EACH noodle dish takes about 30 minutes to be ready, they are made one at a time**** and they had other orders before ours.*the asteriscs are just to make sure you understand that if you are planning on going to have the noodles!!!I was sooo disappointed! That's was the whole reason for us to be there! We changed our orders, sadly... BUt one of my friends kept the noodles and I tried. Was excellent! I had a braised pork and it was good. Also had the sampler dumplings and that was excellent!Service was perfect. Our waitress are so nice and kind, very attentive. On top of everything, perfect! In general I would say the sevice is great, if you don't count the availability of their main "product" as part of it. Whay they don't have a process in place to have more handpulled noodles available is something I don't understand. With the amount of customers they have, sure they would have it fresh all the time. Or have 2 guys working on it...it is not rocket science.I really want to go back and try other dishes, though.

My family and I stopped by here for lunch via on our way to Memphis. We were looking forward having some freshly made soup dumplings and hand pulled noodle soup. The waitress told us the person that makes the fresh pulled noodles is off on Mondays and Wednesdays. It was a big let down because we were looking forward of tasting a freshly made pulled noodles.Anyway we tried the soup dumplings which were freshly made in front of everybody in the restaurant. They also make shrimp, beef, pork, and vegetable dumplings. It was all quite good and hot.We also ordered some pork belly sandwich and it was amazing. The bun is made just like the dumpling white breading but thicker. The pork belly was marinated in some kind of sweet soy and boiled. It also had variety of fresh vegetable added with the pork belly. It was a great combination of ingredients and completely baffled how great it tasted. The place has a modern jazzy Chinese decor and the lights are little bit more dimmer. A modern and classy place. The staff are decent and the prices are accommodating. The only drawback was we did not get a chance to taste the pulled noodles. Maybe someday.

Best purely Chinese restaurant I've been to in Dallas. Big fan of the Dan Dan Noodles, so much so that thought I've visited multiple times it remains the only entree that I've had. The handmade noodles are crafted right in front of the diners, providing a spectacular show of authentic Chinese culinary tradition. This sentence might sound dramatic, but it's a dramatic noodle-making spectacle. Staff is very friendly, albeit a bit brusque when it comes to explanations of the dishes. Royal China has struck the right balance of authentic Chinese cuisine, accessible American adaptations and superior American service.Growing up in New York, Chinese food was part of my diet multiple times per week. I have had the good fortune of visiting mainland China several times and experienced the good, the weird and the ugly. Then....I moved to Texas...it got uglier. Until I found Royal China.Royal China hand-makes their dumplings and noodles. The process is on display for the entire restaurant to see and you may even hear the occasional smattering of applause for the enthusiastic noodle man.My wife and I enjoyed the Shanghai soup dumplings, spare ribs, Henan stir-fried Lamian with beef (broad noodles) and the Da-Chien Chicken (spicy). The restaurant was very busy but still clearly ran efficiently. Our server checked on us often to make sure we were enjoying everything.I can finally say that I found my Chinese restaurant in Dallas.

Came back here with my family during the holidays, but that doesn't give what i'm about to review, a free pass. Jam- packed, the Host put our name down(table for 4) and told us it would be about 30 minutes wait. As we sat there, we would notice a few parties coming in after us, and getting seated within minutes. I even noticed one guy who had come in almost 30 minutes after we did, weasel his way to the host and just make small chit chat with him...moments later, his party of 4(just like us coincidentally), was seated without hesitation. Needless to say, we waited almost an hour and a half! AND when we were finally seated, we noticed everyone around us was getting a plate of fried wonton noodles to munch on...EXCEPT for us. And mind you, after waiting that long, we were naturally starving! It took almost 5 different servers and including some busboys along with waiting another 30 minutes to finally get some freakin fried noodles to munch on. RIDIC!!! I ordered the pork belly with mushrooms and wide noodle and this time the noodle was so thick, and the pork belly was so bleh...it made me wonder why i was so obsessed with it to begin with. All in all, my second experience here is definitely going to be my last. bye bye Royal China! How very disappointing.

At $8.50 they are more expensive than those at Jeng Chi but they were fantasticThe came the noodles...being hand pulled right there I had to order them. I got the Henan Lamain (wide, flat noodles) and hubby got the Lanzou Lamain (thin round) noodles and OH MYYYYYYY they were fantastic. We had dinner here at around 8 pm on a weeknight. Its a casual place to have dinner. We were meeting a friend who we hadn't seen in a while and were catching up as we were approached by our waiter multiple times within 10 minutes of sitting down. However, he was polite and probably meant well as the kitchen closed before we left that night. He also fished out a plate of the thin handpulled noodles even though the kitchen said they were out.We heeded the advice of other reviewers and chose to stick with the dumplings and hand-pulled noodle soup. I'm not chinese and therefore, may not have the same appreciation for XLB dumplings but I thought they were just ok. I preferred the pork belly dumplings on clam shell buns. The Dan Dan soup was pretty good and flavorful too. Overall, good food and good experience but no particular wow factor. Like a few other reviewers, I may be biased since I've been to some amazing Chinese restaurants in both San Francisco and New York. I've been advised by my husband that Dallas Chinese simply doesn't compare yet. We have hope!

Talk about judging a book by its cover! My first impression of this place was: this place is really nice looking and thus not a legit Chinese restaurant, and 99% of the patrons were white therefore this place is totally not a legit Chinese restaurant. My Asian friend asked me if I took her to a Chinese buffet. No, this is not a Chinese buffet! So when I walked in, I already felt like this place may not be bueno. Well well well, what a surprise! We ordered:xiao long bao (steamed dumpling soup) - delicious! It was piping hot, savory, salty and sweet, and oh so delicious! I think this is the best xiao long bao in Dallas. Considering I've only had these dumplings at one other restaurant in the DFW (at Jeng Chi in Garland), my opinion doesn't mean very much. However, the best ones I've had were in NYC at Joe's Shanghai. Anyway, Royal China charges $8 for 6 dumplings, which is pretty ok by me.Noodles with pork belly - it was very neat to watch the dudes pull the ribbons of noodle in front of us. What was even better was eating and enjoying the noodles. The soup broth was salty and sweet and bacony. Very good!Lion head noodles - these are the mung bean noodles. This dish was delicious, too. It tasted like the fried version of xiao long bao because the meat filling tasted very similar to the xiao long bao.orange chicken with broccoli - this was the most mediocre dish and probably offered to placate the palate of a typical obese American (who was seated right next to us and ate as much as the three little Asian people at my table). My only gripe is with the tea. I was craving tea and xiao long bao when we arrived, but I was disappointed by the tea. They have this menu that prominently displays all these fancy teas, and they are quite expensive for what it is. I ordered the lychee tea, and what I got was just the regular hot tea you get at any Chinese restaurant. I guess I was expecting Teavana-flavorful tea. I wouldn't bother with the $7 tea next time. I can make my own jasmine tea at home for freakin 10 cents.4.5 stars!

So.. as a chinese transplant from Los Angeles..(and previously from Taiwan).. I was literally a little ashamed to walk through the very Americanized sign and doors.I had heard amazing things about the dumplings here and came to try this famous 'dumpling bar'...It was a bit jarring when we were seated and there were no chopsticks given to us.. and the tea came out very americanized (loose leaf). I also discovered that my waitress didn't speak chinese (though was heavily accented, so i'm guessing korean?). It was clear to me straight away that we should stick with the dumpling menu... though i did have one order of green onion pancakes.Green onion pancakes- a bit oily, but appropriately thin and great flavor (unlike Jeng Chi's which was too thick for my taste).Dumpling sampler - OK.. i prefer the shrimp and leek steamed dumplings from Jeng Chi to these. And the artificial color of the dumpling skin made it very unappetizing. Finally the skin was way too thick.. it was like chewing cardboard.Xiao Long Bao - Great Flavor - best I've had in Dallas - but again, the dumpling skin was way too thickNoodle - It was one of their specialty noodles that is served dry. It was good - but too al dente.. Though I couldn't properly enjoy it after filling up on xiao long bao. After Ding Tai Fong in Arcadia (Los angeles area), these dumplings are poor substitutes - but the flavor of the xiao long bao is right on.. and if thick skin appeals to you, this would be the perfect place for you.The atmosphere is too americanized and it feels like a cheap strip mall joint. For more authenticity and killer bakery items - go to Jeng Chi - their xiao long bao is not as good - but every thing else there is better.- At least they didn't make me eat with a fork! :p

As you sit in for a nice "Asian" dinner, possibly even on Christmas day--isn't that like a traditional Christmas thing to do?--you may find yourself asking, "What is that pounding noise? It almost sounds like people are having sex in the middle of the dining room!" Well, that, my friends, is the sound of hand-pulled Chinese noodles. This eatery is honestly the brainchild of some of the most unorthodox dynamics around. Here is a fairly un-Asian neighborhood Chinese joint cranking out hand-pulled noodles. The menu offers the typical "Orange Chicken lunch specials" alongside handcrafted $10 orders of dumplings. The fairly authentic Chinese noodle dishes are served in a prissy/yuppy sort of environment, with nice decor and all.I honestly think you are paying a good premium for the experience. At upwards of what I would say to be an average of $15-20 a head, you aren't getting much grub. The hand-pulled noodle dishes begin at $10, and with pretty much just noodles and broth at the bare minimum, you are sure to want more. Then you look at the dumplings menu and find that they are more than $1 a pop. Now, it gets steep.Fortunately, they are doing pretty solid stuff. The xiao long bao (soup dumplins') offer some meaty flavor, great texture, and tasty broth all packaged into a complex bite. The Dan Dan noodles, whether thick or thin, boast a flavorful concoction of sweet, salty, and spicy broth. Cold, so be warned. Unfortunately, they didn't have the thick cut ready for us.Royal China is definitely an experience to be had if you are into uppity or unique dining experiences. It is setting the precedent for the care that needs to be taken in the way of Asian grub, but you are certainly gonna see the steep labor cost in the way of your bill.

Accompanied Ray P and friends to Royal China after his fabulous Yelp of Royal China.Upon entering, you realize you came here for the noodle watching.Guest diners get to peek into a very rare sight here in Dallas: noodle and dumpling made from scratch inside Royal China's open kitchen. The ladies and gents ramp up the show when there's an audience--and in fact, you can watch the demonstration up close and personal at the dumpling bar. However, I have to say that the XLBs were just okay; as others have mentioned, the soup dumplings can be hit or miss--and on my visit they were underwhelming. I expected large, juicy dumplings, but I found them on the small and dry side. Other disappointments was the Dragon and Phoenix dish: two dishes on one plate consisting of General Kaos chicken (tangy but flat) and garlic shrimp (terrible). The bok choy and mushroom dish also failed to impress, especially since they went with the use of dried shiitakes, which retained that preserved taste even with cooking.Better were the chicken xienn bien, fried round dumplings filled with mushrooms and crunchy bits of radish. My man also enjoyed their crunchy shrimp toast, remarking on their excellent texture and taste.Best was the pork belly gwa bao--amazingly flavorful and rich pork belly slices tucked in steamed bun and ornamented with green onions and picked veggies. Everyone at our table agreed this was a fantastic distraction from the dumpling show. Ray's lady proceeded to order another pork belly dish, one with noodles (henan lurou lamian) which she devoured immediately--it looked great, and according to her, it was fabulous.Service was attentive and accommodating, despite the busy Saturday dinner hour. However, I'd probably not order XLBs again unless they work on the consistency. I also recommend avoiding the Americanized dishes (too plain and too pricey) and focus on the fresh, the unfamiliar and the exotic items on their menu.

Let's go ahead and get one thing out of the way. It's not a chain, it is a little pricey (hello, it's in the midst of Preston Hollow and near University/Highland Park), but the quality is great (hello... hand pulled noodles). So if you want a $10 dinner including app, entree and dessert, you can't get it here. So read the menu first, check prices, then don't go instead of complaining. Now on to the good things.Went again to try some other things. Had the hot and sour soup. Pretty good, not unlike many places around town. Also had the crab and cheese wontons again... yum. Finally tried the Xiao Long Bao. Let me first say, I usually never order dumplings of any kind unless they are drowing in a big bowl of soup. I now find myself a changed man. These were some of the most delicious dumplings I have ever had. The fact that they had what seemed to be a broth inside the dumpling made it even better. Also decided to have a semi guilt-free snack later and got a Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup with chili oil to go.On another note, to the person who said that they preferred PF Chang's over this, please stop reviewing anything, ever, again. Anyone who prefers a chain over something locally owned should be ashamed.

They always deliver within their time limit, and most of the time, they arrive early. The Jalapeno Chicken is a favorite, and I do enjoy their noddle dishes. The food is on the expensive side, but take into consideration this restaurant is in Preston Hollow. The food is also good, which justifies the prices. They have traditional dishes on the menu, as well as some Texan fusion dishes, which is creative and fun. Also, the almond cookies by the cash register are a treat. Soft and scrumptious.

Seriously the most delicious Chinese food I've ever had!First off - they have a guy that was flown in from China just to spend his days making the perfect noodles for your enjoyment. Not only is he great at his job, he obviously enjoys entertaining - as he'll put on a show if he sees you watching.Secondly - they have wontons that have soup on the inside. The *inside*. I've never seen this before, and the deliciousness that explodes in your mouth is unparalleled.Thirdly - you can't pick a bad dish. I've tried just about everything they've got, and I've yet to taste something I wouldn't try again. All said and done: make a reservation - it's worth the drive!

***** Food; Great dumplings, pot stickers, noodles and the chocolate cake/fudge was soft and moist with a hot, dripping chocolate sauce on top. This dessert was a shock because Chinese restaurants usually have the same tired traditional Chinese desserts, but this dessert was unique and VERY tasty.***** Atmosphere; meal AND a show! The open kitchen shows the chef making NOODLES by hand!***** Service; The service was quick, curteous, and the boss himself kept checking in on us.***** Conclusion; If you like dumplings, noodles and potstickers, then this is the place. Don't forget the dessert, too. Stuff here is a bit expensive, but considering that you get live entertainment for just the price of a meal AND rent in this neighborhood is expensive, the price is acceptable for their unique Asian fare.

I've heard mixed reviews about this place so I finally decided to give it a try. I was hoping that it wouldn't be like no traditional old school Chinese restaurant. . .and thank goodness it wasn't. :)When we pulled up to park and walked to the restaurant, we already noticed people going in and out and we even saw a couple of people waiting outside. Wow - this place is a happenin' place! But then I thought, oh man, there's going to be a wait. (This was on Friday evening around 7:30pm. . .yes, one of the busiest times to be eating dinner, and it's on a Friday hehe)We walk in and notice that the decor is pretty awesome...red, green, yellow - not too overpowering, but a nice balance. The fixtures are also really appealing and it's not so Asian-like..has a good modern/contemporary feel. So far I'm liking this place! We put our name down for a party of 4...about a 15-20min wait. Not too bad..we walk around the shopping center and come back to wait a couple more minutes. There's a very very small bar (seating for maybe 4-5 people?) and a waiting around that looked quite comfy but all the seats were taken up...No problem, didn't mind standing for a few minutes (we stood for like 3-4minutes). We get seated at a GREAT spot...right next to the kitchen and where the chef is making the noodles. He definitely caught my eye because he has this crazy happy look while making the noodles - It's good to see people really enjoying and embracing their job like that. There were a couple of kids at various tables watching and he'd give the kids a little piece of the dough to play aorund with. I actually noticed one little girl making the same motions as the chef and she seemed really happy and entertained.Onto the meal - our server was this shy young college student who gave us excellent service with a smile. We ordered the XLB (of course), purple haze (gluten free and delicious!), Lanzhou beef noodle soup, and the henan la-mien. They didn' have the right noodles for the la-mien so we got the noodles they put in the beef noodle soup - it was delicious! All the dishes were really good. My only negative is taht the XLB isn't super 100% authentic...I feel like it's different than what you'd get in Asian, but nonetheless, still great flavor. I think my favorite was the purple haze becuase I LOVE eggplant..and the fact that it was gluten-free yet so delicious and tastey, it was amazing!I'm definitely coming back and bringing more friends with me :)

Being a Chinese American, I'm always looking for good Chinese food. This place blew me away. I was reminded of my grandma's Shanghainese cooking over and over again, with a modern twist! I highly recommend eating here. Their newly remodeled interior is swanky retro modern and if you look closely, you'll see that they cleverly revamped their old furniture. The photographs on the wall, I hear, were taken by the owner's wife. If you're not familiar with Chinese food, I recommend taking someone who is.?

My family was looking for Chinese in a new area and we went to Royal China based on the other reviews. They were spot on- delish! I tried a new dish and my parents went with old standbys- everything was fresh and tasty. It's a nicer restaurant, not your hole in the wall place or pricing, but its worth the cost. Our server was very prompt and attentive- in that pleasant non obtrusive kind of way. The ambiance was refreshing: well lit, comfortable music, nice decor. You should go! We can't wait to go again.?
